Comment:
Lucilia sp (blow fly, green bottle or sheep flies) maggots smooth and creamy with 12 segments and when mature (3-6 days after hatching) 10-15 mm long- cause strike in sheep. Adults are shiny green flies can lay their eggs in foul wounds or cavities of the body like ears in humans such as shepherds with poor hygiene. The maggots are identified by the appearance and spacing of the spiracles. The larvae of Lucilia have been used for the treatment of osteomyelitis. L. cuprina is the most common species in Australia.
